Managing the Edge
Managing the Edge really involves two key responsibilities:
The first involves the management of the device network. This network may be made up of RFID Readers, various Sensors as well as Actuators. All of these devices require configuration as well as monitoring.
At GlobeRanger, we call this Device Management and utilize a runtime environment known as the “Edge Device Manager” along with a user interface known as the “Edge Management Console” for a deployment manager to utilize in the configuration and monitoring of his or her device infrastructure. A single console can be utilized to manage many distributed runtime environments.
The second challenge at the Edge is managing the processes that will be used to transform device oriented data into actionable business information.
iMotion accomplishes this first through the utilization of the EPCglobal Standard Application Level Events (ALE) interface. ALE describes a mechanism for the Edge Device Manager to process large amounts of incoming tag data into more manageable and relevant tag reports that typically associate a set of tags along with a time and location.
iMotion then collects this tag report as part of an edge process which is running inside of the Edge Process Manager. Processes in the EPM are used to execute business logic and rules and interact with other devices including handhelds in order to create actionable business information.
